Penang Celebrates 50 Years of China-Malaysia Diplomatic Relations with Enhanced Connectivity and Tourism Growth

Penang, George Town — Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Wong Hon Wai, highlighted the strengthening ties between the two countries during a ceremony at Ghee Hiang, Penang’s oldest heritage brand, as part of a significant celebration marking five decades of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China. With an emphasis on trade, tourism, and cross-cultural interaction, the event honoured the historical and contemporary ties between the nations.

YB Wong underlined in his address how important Penang is to this connection, pointing out that the state has developed into a major destination for Chinese travellers. “Over the past five decades, our relationship has grown stronger, with China becoming one of Malaysia’s most important partners in trade, tourism, and cultural exchange,” he said. The councillor emphasized the notable rise in Chinese tourists, particularly in 2024 when China came in third place among all countries in terms of arrivals at Penang International Airport.

Based on the most recent data, Penang welcomed 44,847 Chinese visitors between January and June 2024—a startling 244.21% rise over the same period in 2023. Additionally, during the first half of the year, 64,015 Chinese tourists rode the Penang Hill funicular, making them the country’s most frequent visitors. Wong attributed this expansion to the closer linkages and Penang’s growing accessibility due to direct flights.

Wong highlighted the inclusion of new direct flights from important Chinese cities, such as Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong, to support these figures. These routes are anticipated to draw even more Chinese tourists, strengthening Penang’s economy and tourism industry. Thanks to the efforts of airlines like Xiamen Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and AirAsia, Penang currently has direct connections to seven Chinese destinations.

The occasion also honoured Ghee Hiang, a representation of Penang’s historical ties to China. Known for its traditional biscuits and sesame oil, the 168-year-old company, which originated in Fujian, China has grown to become a beloved heritage landmark in Penang. Ghee Hiang’s devotion to community activities, especially in the health sector, and its commitment to maintaining Penang’s traditional legacy were also commended by Wong.

Chinese visitors to Penang are eligible for free presents from Ghee Hiang in honour of the significant occasion and the launch of more flights. To ensure that guests can take advantage of everything Penang has to offer, they have also partnered with neighbourhood establishments to provide vouchers.

Wong urged more cooperation between Penang and China in his closing remarks, promoting investments, cross-cultural interactions, and travel. “Let’s keep strengthening this solid foundation of friendship as we go on… By working together, we can build Penang’s future and fortify our ties to China for many years to come,” he stated.

The festival highlighted the growing significance of tourist and cultural relations between Penang and China, marking an important milestone in the continuous collaboration between the two countries.
