Labuan RM78 Million Waterfront Project to Boost Economy and Tourism

LABUAN, March 15 (Bernama)– Labuan is set for a transformation with the initiation of the RM78 million Waterfront Development Project (Phase 1) that will be aimed at the island’s economy and tourism sectors.

The development, to be hosted at Victoria Harbour Beach, where Labuan used to have a wet market, is expected to create new economic prospects while enhancing the island’s appeal as a tourist destination.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, visited the project site and was briefed on its progress by Labuan Building Planning and Control Department acting director Ag Aizal Ag Anak. She reiterated that the project would drive investments, launch business activities, and grow economic clusters that drive tourism development.

The redevelopment will include a range of attractions, including recreational spaces, restaurants, public event spaces, food bazaar, sea sports activities, water cruises, improved lighting, water taxi services, and additional parking facilities. These developments are aligned with the Labuan Development Blueprint 2030, which emphasizes smart tourism, green city programs, and sustainable socio-economic development.

With the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) support, the project will have the involvement of various government agencies, including the Department of Federal Territories (JWP), Labuan Corporation (LC), Ministry of Tourism and Culture, and Public Works Department (PWD). Tourism-related organizations and private industry players will be involved in the project.

Among the star attractions is the creation of Labuan’s nightlife, with suggestions of a night trails, flea market, stargazing trail, seaside night restaurants, and bistros. Dr. Zaliha hoped that these ventures would bring long-term economic dividends to the people and offer sustainable development for the island.
