KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia welcomed more than 10 million visitors from Singapore in the first half of 2025, reflecting a strong rebound in regional travel.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said tourist arrivals from the republic reached 10.28 million between January and June, representing a 22.5 per cent increase compared with the same period last year. Indonesia, China and Thailand also ranked among the top source markets for Malaysia during the period.

Arrivals from Indonesia rose by 8.2 per cent to 2.19 million, while China recorded the sharpest growth, with 2.17 million visitors, a 35.6 per cent jump from last year.

Tiong attributed the steady growth to targeted promotional strategies tailored to the potential of each market. He noted that efforts would increasingly leverage digital and social media platforms to reach high-potential audiences.

Highlighting niche segments, the minister said Muslim-friendly tourism continues to be a priority, with the Islamic Tourism Centre spearheading initiatives to enhance Malaysia’s reputation as a welcoming destination for Muslim travellers.

He added that the government also aims to strengthen community-based tourism through homestay programmes that showcase local culture and heritage, while providing economic opportunities for rural communities.

State governments, he stressed, must play a proactive role in identifying suitable communities for development to ensure the benefits of tourism are widely shared.
