George Town, Penang – September 3, 2024: The much-awaited details of the Aspen-Klippa Penang Bridge International Marathon 2024 (PBIM 2024) were revealed today at the Pejabat Pos KOMTAR by YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy. In addition to disclosing new race routes, official gear, and big sponsorships, the event, which was attended by sponsors, the media, and other dignitaries, marked an important milestone in the history of the marathon.
A Journey of Growth and Prestige
YB Wong Hon Wai paused to reflect on the history of the marathon since its start in 1986. First held to mark the opening of the famous Penang Bridge, the race has expanded rapidly, going from a small local event to one of Asia’s most prestigious marathons. These days, the marathon not only encourages health and harmony but also presents Penang’s diverse cultural heritage to a worldwide viewership.
The Longest Bridge Run in Southeast Asia
Given that it will be held on the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, also referred to as the Penang Second Bridge, this year’s marathon promises to be historic. With over 20,000 competitors anticipated, this additional route will make PBIM 2024 the longest bridge run in Southeast Asia. Runners will be treated to stunning vistas spanning the whole width of the bridge as the event begins and ends at Aspen Vision City.
Diverse Race Routes for All Participants
The competition provides a range of race choices to accommodate runners of all skill levels:
– Full Marathon (42.195 km): This course crosses the Penang Second Bridge and is designed to test even the most experienced runners. Hydration and medical stops are positioned strategically throughout the route.
Half Marathon (21.097km): This option is a little less strenuous and provides a taste of the full marathon experience. The course has been optimized for smooth running.
– 10km Run: Ideal for individuals who want to participate but don’t want to commit to the greater distances, this route is more leisurely but still gratifying.
Elite Status and AIMS Certification
PBIM 2024 proudly holds the certification from the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), placing it among an elite group of marathons that meet the highest international standards. It joins the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon as one of only two AIMS-certified marathons in Peninsular Malaysia, further enhancing its prestige.
Official Merchandise Unveiled
In collaboration with Brooks Apparel, the official marathon T-shirt and running vest were unveiled. These designs, reflecting Penang’s vibrant culture, are expected to become cherished keepsakes for participants. A special fashion show will be held at Klippa Mall, Batu Kawan, on 21 September 2024, to showcase these items.
Medals Reflecting Achievement and Perseverance
Finishers will be awarded meticulously crafted medals, featuring unique designs for each race category. The medals, designed by ASPEN and EMICO, include a four-leaf clover motif symbolizing the Batu Kawan bypass, making them both a memento of participation and a symbol of achievement.
Inclusive Participation: A Historic Moment for PBIM
In a landmark initiative, PBIM 2024 will see the participation of twelve visually impaired individuals, sponsored by the Aspen Group. This includes ten students from St. Nicholas’ Home and two other VIPs, marking the first time such a significant number of visually impaired participants will join the marathon. This effort underscores PBIM’s commitment to inclusivity.
A Collective Effort: Sponsorships and Collaborations
YB Wong Hon Wai acknowledged the vital role of sponsors in making PBIM 2024 possible. Aspen Klippa has taken the lead as the title sponsor, with support from a diverse group of sponsors including Brooks Apparel, Seiko, Emico, and Star Media Group, among others. Additional collaborations and sponsorships are expected to be announced soon.
Final Call for Registration
With registration set to close at the end of September, runners are encouraged to secure their spots for what promises to be an unforgettable event. The registration deadline has been extended due to high demand, highlighting the marathon’s growing popularity.
As preparations for the Aspen-Klippa Penang Bridge International Marathon 2024 continue, excitement is building for what is set to be a landmark event. Whether participating as runners, sponsors, or supporters, everyone involved contributes to a celebration of community, endurance, and the unbreakable spirit of Penang. YB Wong Hon Wai concluded by expressing his confidence that this year’s marathon will be one for the history books.
