JOHOR BARU: The extension of KTM Bhd’s Electric Train Service (ETS) from Gemas to Johor Baru is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and give a strong boost to the nation’s tourism industry, according to tourism officials.
Tourism Malaysia deputy director-general (promotion) Datuk Musa Yusof said the new service — which is projected to take passengers just four hours from KL Sentral to JB Sentral — would come at an opportune time ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026.
“The ETS will provide a direct link between Johor Baru and Kuala Lumpur, encouraging tourist movement and allowing travellers to explore more destinations,” he told reporters after officiating the Gawai and Kaamatan Festival celebration at a hotel here.
He noted that tourist hotspots along the existing route have already benefited since the service was extended to Segamat in March, especially during the durian season.
Musa also highlighted that Tourism Malaysia had been engaging with industry players across the country to prepare for VM2026.
“We have been meeting hotels and other stakeholders to ensure they’re equipped and ready for the anticipated rise in visitors. Our discussions have also focused on fostering closer collaboration and leveraging digital media to reach a broader global audience,” he said.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Association of Hotels Johor Chapter chairman Ivan Teo said the improved logistics would enhance Johor’s appeal as a tourism gateway.
“Better accessibility is the foundation of tourism. With the ETS reaching Johor Baru, we can expect not only more domestic travellers but also international visitors to use Johor as a base to explore nearby towns like Segamat and Kluang,” Teo said.
Although the extension of the ETS promises a smoother travel experience, KTMB has yet to release its schedule or the expected journey times for the Segamat–Johor Baru leg and tickets to Johor Baru remain unavailable in its latest advance sales.
Phase 2 of the Southern ETS project will stretch the service to Kluang, while the final Phase 3 will connect to Johor Baru.
