MELAKA, July 17- The Melaka state government is set to roll out a smart tourism initiative called “Smart AI Tourism Melaka” by September this year, aimed at enhancing the digital tourism landscape, Bernama reported.

According to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, the initiative will utilise artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the overall visitor experience by helping tourists explore and navigate Melaka’s historical and cultural attractions more effectively.

“This initiative will serve as both a guide and interpreter in multiple languages, highlighting Melaka’s rich heritage and key tourist destinations. It is expected to help draw more visitors to the state,” he said during the Melaka Telecommunication Appreciation and Synergy Night on Tuesday.

The event also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and strategic partnership between Melaka ICT Holdings Sdn Bhd (MICTH) and three major telecom companies -Rohas Euco Industries Berhad, Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd, and U Mobile Sdn Bhd.

Unlike conventional static displays such as signboards, Ab Rauf said the Smart AI Tourism system would offer two-way interactive experiences, with features like QR codes that automatically translate information into multiple languages. The platform will also link users to expanded content through the official state tourism website for a more immersive digital journey.

In a related development, he noted that Melaka has reached 99.97% 4G coverage and 89.7% 5G coverage in populated areas, with average mobile broadband speeds hitting 121 Mbps, surpassing the national target of 100 Mbps.

“The state government aims to achieve full 4G and 5G coverage in all populated areas by 2027,” he added, according to Bernama.
