GEORGE TOWN, PENANG —  The Penang Port Commission (PPC) is undertaking strategic upgrades to transform the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal into a world-class, multi-functional facility that blends superior passenger experiences with versatile event capabilities.

Chairman of PPC, Dato’ Yeoh Soon Hin, reaffirmed the Commission’s long-term commitment to infrastructure improvements and operational excellence during the recent inaugural call of Star Voyager, a vessel operated by Resorts World Cruises.

“We are continuously enhancing the terminal to deliver seamless and memorable experiences for cruise passengers, while firmly positioning Penang as a premier destination on the global cruise circuit,” he said.

A key upgrade recently completed includes a comprehensive refurbishment of the terminal’s passenger waiting area restrooms, significantly improving comfort and hygiene standards.

Yeoh added that such enhancements are essential in shaping lasting first impressions and fostering tourism growth through repeat visitation.

Beyond physical improvements, PPC is working closely with the police, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and the Tourism Ministry, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) to strengthen traffic management, security protocols, and the overall ambience around the terminal.

“These collaborative efforts aim to support a safe, efficient and welcoming environment reflective of Malaysia’s hospitality,” he added.

He also said that the arrival of the Star Voyager ship was marked by a traditional plaque exchange ceremony and cultural dance performances arranged in collaboration with Tourism Malaysia, symbolising Penang’s growing appeal as a port of call for international cruise liners.

Looking ahead, Yeoh unveiled an ambitious proposal to reimagine Swettenham Pier as a “Unique Event Space” during non-cruise days.

With its prime waterfront location adjacent to George Town’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, the terminal is ideally positioned to serve as a premium venue for art exhibitions, cultural showcases, food festivals, corporate functions, and lifestyle markets.

“Swettenham Pier offers untapped potential beyond its maritime function.

“By activating this space for curated events, we can inject new energy into Penang’s MICE economy and maximize the terminal’s utility throughout the year,” he added.

The envisioned dual-use strategy not only enhances operational efficiency but is also expected to generate ripple effects across Penang’s tourism ecosystem, benefiting local vendors, hotels, event organizers, and service providers. This integrated approach aligns with broader state goals of economic diversification and sustainable tourism development.

Yeoh added that such initiatives are instrumental in revitalizing the port precinct, attracting both leisure travellers and business delegates, and enriching Penang’s cultural and economic landscape.

“Through strategic reinvention, Swettenham Pier can evolve from a transit point into a dynamic platform for global connectivity, cultural exchange, and economic opportunity,” he added.
