Sarawak’s AirBorneo to Boost Tourism, Close Connectivity Gaps says, Abdul Karim

KUCHING, June 19 — Sarawak’s move to take over MASwings Sdn Bhd and transform it into a state-owned airline, AirBorneo, marks a major leap in its strategy to unlock tourism potential through enhanced air connectivity, said Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The state Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts said AirBorneo will play a pivotal role in positioning Sarawak as a premier destination for both regional and international travellers.

“For far too long, limited air access has constrained the growth of our tourism industry,” Abdul Karim said in an email interview. “AirBorneo is a game changer. It allows us to bridge connectivity gaps — especially in rural and underserved areas — and showcase Sarawak’s hidden treasures, from deep rainforests to charming coastal towns.”

The acquisition of MASwings is expected to be finalised by December 31, with ownership to be fully transferred to AirBorneo Holdings Sdn Bhd, a wholly state-owned entity. The Sarawak government signed the sale and purchase agreement with Malaysia Aviation Group, MASwings’ parent company, on February 12.

Abdul Karim said the airline’s initial focus would be on strengthening rural air services in Sarawak and Sabah, with plans to gradually expand regionally and internationally.

“Our long-term vision includes regional and global connectivity via code-sharing agreements with Malaysia Airlines and other international carriers,” he said. “We’re looking to link Sarawak to major ASEAN and Middle Eastern hubs, with an eye on long-haul markets like Germany, Japan and South Korea.”

He noted that improved air access would not only fuel the tourism sector but also attract foreign investment, facilitate trade, and support talent mobility.

The state is also ramping up efforts to secure new international routes and increase flight frequencies. “At Routes Asia 2025 in Perth, our delegation engaged key aviation stakeholders to promote Sarawak’s offerings and explore new air service opportunities,” he said.

Complementing these initiatives is Sarawak’s plan to build a new international airport in Kuching, aimed at positioning the capital as a key aviation hub in the region.

“In essence, AirBorneo is more than just an airline. It is a strategic pillar of our tourism and economic agenda — combining infrastructure development, service excellence, rural empowerment and global outreach,” Abdul Karim said.
