PENANG, Nov 24, 2025 – Penang’s air links with Indonesia received a boost with the launch of TransNusa’s inaugural Jakarta–Penang flight, a move Tourism Malaysia says will drive more visitors into the state ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026.
The Indonesian carrier will operate the route three times a week before switching to daily flights in December. The Airbus A320 departed Jakarta at 5 am and arrived in Penang at about 8.30 am, where it was greeted with a traditional water salute, marking the official commencement of the new service.
To commemorate the occasion, officials from TransNusa, Tourism Malaysia and Malaysia Airports took part in a cake-cutting ceremony at Penang International Airport, symbolising the start of a strengthened air partnership between both cities.

Tourism Malaysia deputy director-general (Promotion II) Lee Thai Hung said the new service gives travellers more options, especially those coming for leisure, medical treatment and business events.
“This route brings Penang’s heritage and attractions closer to Jakarta. With VM2026 just weeks away, better connectivity like this will help sustain tourist flows from Indonesia,” he said.
TransNusa group CEO Dato’ Bernard Francis said Penang was chosen because PIA offers a long-term incentive programme that many other regional airports lack.
“The route came together in under six months thanks to strong support from Tourism Malaysia and PIA,” he said.
Indonesia remains Malaysia’s biggest tourism contributor, with 4.15 million arrivals recorded last year — a 19% rise from 2023. From January to August this year, 2.92 million Indonesians visited Malaysia, signalling continued demand.
To support VM2026, TransNusa has also brought in more than 30 Jakarta-based travel agents for a familiarisation trip. The initiative is backed by Penang Global Tourism and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd.
Tourism Malaysia said the new route reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen ties and improve regional connectivity between both countries as VM2026 approaches.
