Penang-Kunming charter flights strengthen tourism, trade ties

GEORGE TOWN: A new chapter in Penang’s international connectivity has taken flight with the launch of the Penang-Kunming charter service, strengthening tourism, business and cultural ties between Malaysia and China.

The initiative, highlighted during the Penang–Kunming Charter Flight and Tourism Product Promotion event at JEN Penang Georgetown by Shangri-La, brings together industry players from both destinations in a move seen as a significant boost to bilateral cooperation.

Penang state executive councillor for tourism and creative economy Wong Hon Wai said the growing connectivity reflects Penang’s role as a key aviation hub in northern Malaysia, extending its reach to neighbouring regions, including northern Sumatra.

He noted that Penang is currently connected to eight cities in China through scheduled flights, with the addition of Kunming via charter services further strengthening its aviation network.

The charter flights, operated by Batik Air Malaysia and managed by Sichuan Haixu Aviation Service Co., Ltd., were first introduced in October 2025 with a weekly frequency. Following encouraging demand, the service has since been increased to three flights weekly.

Wong described charter flights as more than just supplementary capacity, saying they play a strategic role in developing new routes and markets.

“They serve as a testing ground to assess demand and viability, while allowing airlines and tourism players to refine their offerings. In many cases, charter services pave the way for future scheduled flights,” he said.

He added that such services help build sustainable passenger demand while enabling industry players to better understand travel patterns and preferences between the two markets.

The Penang-Kunming route significantly reduces travel time between the two cities to about four hours, compared to over 10 hours previously with transit connections, offering greater convenience for both leisure and business travellers.

Industry representatives said the direct link is expected to unlock tourism potential between Penang, known for its Unesco World Heritage status and diverse culinary scene, and Kunming, often referred to as the “Spring City” for its pleasant climate and rich cultural landscape.

Beyond tourism, the route is also set to enhance trade and investment flows. Penang serves as an economic hub in northern Malaysia, while Kunming is a key gateway for China-ASEAN trade, making improved connectivity a catalyst for deeper economic collaboration.

The service is also seen as a platform to strengthen people-to-people exchanges, with increased movement of tourists, students and cultural groups fostering closer ties between both regions.

Wong also highlighted the longstanding historical connection between Penang and Kunming, dating back to the Second Sino-Japanese War, when many overseas Chinese from Penang were among the volunteers who supported China’s war efforts along the Burma Road.

“This shared history represents a deep-rooted bond that continues to connect our people today,” he said, expressing confidence that the renewed air link would further deepen cooperation and mutual understanding.

With strong participation from travel operators across Malaysia and regional partners, the launch signals growing confidence in Penang’s position as a regional aviation and tourism hub.

As the charter service gains momentum, industry players are optimistic that it will eventually evolve into a regular scheduled route, further enhancing connectivity between Penang and China while contributing to regional growth.
