VIENTIANE: Laos and the World Bank are exploring ways to strengthen the country’s tourism sector as part of efforts to stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities and promote sustainable development.
The Lao Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in collaboration with the World Bank, held a meeting in Vientiane on November 3 to discuss the country’s tourism landscape and identify strategies to maximise the sector’s economic potential.
The meeting was co-chaired by Lao Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Dalany Phommavongsa and World Bank Country Manager for Laos Khwima Nthara, according to local newspaper Pasaxon.
Dalany highlighted Laos’ rich natural resources, historical attractions, cultural heritage and traditional practices as key strengths that could further enhance its position as a tourism destination.
She also emphasised the government’s recognition of tourism as a priority sector, given its significant contribution to the country’s socio-economic development.
Between January and August 2026, Laos welcomed 3,279,241 international visitors, marking a seven per cent increase compared with the corresponding period last year.
During the meeting, participants reviewed the current state of the tourism industry, discussed its potential to generate economic growth and employment, and exchanged recommendations on addressing existing challenges while strengthening the sector’s overall competitiveness.
The discussions are expected to contribute to policy development and practical initiatives under the Lao Tourism Development Plan 2026-2030, with a focus on sustainable tourism and increasing the industry’s contribution to the national economy.
