Income soaring – Cambodia’s tourism makes US$3.63bil in revenue in 2024

PHNOM PENH: According to information provided to the media by the Ministry of Tourism, Cambodia’s tourist industry generated US$3.63 billion in 2024, a 17.8% increase from US$3.08 billion the previous year.

Thailand, Vietnam, China, Laos, and the United States were the top five countries in market arrivals to the country last year, with 6.7 million foreign visitors, up 22.9 per cent from 5.45 million the year before, according to the report.

The research also noted that the tourist industry increased its share of the nation’s GDP from 7.5% in 2021 to approximately 9.4% in 2024.

One of the four pillars that underpin Cambodia’s economy is tourism.

The Temple of Preah Vihear and the Koh Ker archaeological site in northwest Preah Vihear province, the Temple Zone of Sambor Prei Kuk in central Kampong Thom province, and the Angkor Archaeological Park in northwest Siem Reap province are the nation’s four World Heritage Sites.

Additionally, it boasts a magnificent coastline that stretches across four southwest provinces: Sihanoukville, Kampot, Kep, and Koh Kong, totalling approximately 450 kilometres.

Due to the current geopolitical environment, political shifts in the US, and several problems affecting international travel, Thourn Sinan, head of the Pacific Asia Travel Association Cambodia chapter, projects a moderate increase in visitor arrivals to Cambodia in 2025.

“Without a concerted effort to restructure our tourism products and improve air connectivity, as well as an urgent need for effective destination marketing campaigns, I anticipate only modest growth for 2025,” he stated to Xinhua.

“Cambodia has immense potential, but we must take proactive steps to attract visitors,” he stated – Xinhua
