Johor–KL ETS Route Set to Boost Tourism, Says MTGC

JOHOR BAHRU – The new Electric Train Service (ETS) route connecting Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur is expected to stimulate tourism activities along its corridor, particularly in smaller towns, according to the Malaysian Tourist Guides Council (MTGC).

MTGC president Jimmy Leong said the projection was based on data shared during a recent engagement with Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB). He noted that ETS services in other regions have recorded an average occupancy rate of 85%, with about 15% of passengers boarding or alighting in smaller districts.

“Given the popularity of the Johor Bahru–Kuala Lumpur route among both domestic and international travellers, occupancy is likely to be even higher,” he said.

Leong said Kluang, which received ETS services earlier this year, has already experienced increased domestic tourist interest, indicating similar potential for other towns along the JB–KL alignment.

He also said KTMB reported a punctuality rate of 99% for the ETS, providing travellers with a dependable transportation option.

Leong urged local authorities to strengthen supporting infrastructure, including local transport connectivity, logistics and promotional initiatives, to maximise the benefits of the new service.

“The ETS is not merely a connection between Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur. It opens wider opportunities for tourism growth and economic development across multiple districts,” he said, adding that the service could also attract Singaporean and other foreign tourists seeking an alternative to driving or flying.

KTMB commenced its ETS operations to JB Sentral on Monday, introducing a 30% promotional discount for the KL Sentral–JB Sentral–KL Sentral sector. The promotion runs from Dec 12 to Jan 11, 2026, with 5,000 promo codes available under the code JBBEST, subject to terms and conditions.

KTMB Chief Technical Officer Ahmad Nizam Mohamed Amin said the initiative not only enhances daily mobility but also supports Johor’s tourism growth by increasing visitor arrivals, including those from Singapore.

Tickets are available via the KITS Style application, KTMB’s official portal or KTMB kiosk machines. Enquiries can be directed to the KTMB Call Centre at 03-9779 1200.
