Latin American Film Festival Returns to Penang for Fifth Edition

GEORGE TOWN -The 5th Latin American Film Festival (LAFF) made a vibrant return to Penang this year, bringing together the rich cultures and cinematic excellence of Latin America through a series of film screenings and cultural exchanges.

Jointly hosted by the Embassies of Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay, the festival was officially launched at Wawasan Open University on Oct 30. The event was graced by the Guest of Honour, Penang Governor Tun Tun Ramli Ngah Talib and Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, alongside members of the diplomatic corps, industry representatives, and local dignitaries.

A large turnout of film enthusiasts attended the opening, where a selection of acclaimed films from across Latin America was showcased, highlighting the region’s diverse storytelling, social themes, and artistic creativity.

In his address, Chow said that while Latin American investments in Penang remain modest, with the most recent coming from Belize in 2020, the state continues to look forward to strengthening its engagement with Latin American nations.

“We hope this will pave the way for more Latin American countries to engage with us, whether through trade, innovation, education, or culture, as we celebrate Latin America tonight through film, music, and stories that transcend borders,” he said.

He added that the festival represents more than a cinematic celebration, describing it as a bridge connecting Latin America and Penang through shared values and aspirations.

“It is a bridge that connects the Pacific coast of Latin America to the shores of Penang and the Strait of Malacca. And like any strong bridge, it goes both ways, enabling not only cultural exchange but also friendship and understanding,” he said.

Chow noted that despite being separated by oceans, Malaysia and Latin America share deep historical and cultural ties rooted in their colonial pasts and shared commitment to independence, justice, and development.

The festival, which runs until Nov 2, features a lineup of films from Mexico, Chile, Peru, and Colombia. Screenings are held at Coex @ Kilang Besi, located at Hin Bus Depot in George Town, with free admission for the public.

The Latin American Film Festival continues to serve as a platform for cultural diplomacy, fostering greater understanding and collaboration between Malaysia and Latin America through the universal language of film.
