GEORGE TOWN — Malaysia is poised to make history in its cruise tourism industry with the arrival of its first Chinese homeported cruise ship, M/V Piano Land, through a partnership between Chinese operator Astro Ocean Cruise and local travel company Hwajing Travel & Tours Sdn Bhd.
The M/V Piano Land, operated by Astro Ocean Cruise, is scheduled to make its maiden voyage from Penang on November 30, 2025.
As part of the initiative, Hwajing has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Penang Port Commission (PPC) to promote the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) as a dedicated homeport from 2025 to 2027.
The signing ceremony, held at the Penang Port Commission, was witnessed by Dato’ Yeoh Soon Hin, Chairman of the Penang Port Commission and Deputy Chairman of Tourism Malaysia. Kenny Cheong, Managing Director of Hwajing Travel & Tours, and Feng Tong, Vice President of Astro Ocean Cruise, signed the agreement.
PPC chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the move would help position Penang more prominently on the global cruise map and deliver long-term benefits to the local economy.

“With its modern infrastructure, international-standard facilities, and strategic location within the UNESCO World Heritage City of George Town, SPCT is well-positioned to become a preferred homeport in Southeast Asia.
“We believe that this strategic alliance will accelerate efforts to
market Penang’s cruise offerings globally, catalyse tourism development, and bring long-term
benefits to the local economy and community,” he said in his speech.
Hwajing managing director Kenny Cheong said the launch represents an important step in testing the Malaysian market. Seven sailings are planned as a starting point.
“Depending on the market response, we plan to announce additional sailings by the end of the year.
“This venture reflects our commitment to elevating Malaysia’s status as a regional cruise hub and making cruising more accessible to domestic and regional travellers, ” he added.
With a passenger capacity of 1,760, M/V Piano Land offers 880 well-appointed cabins and a wide range of onboard amenities.
It will offer two initial itineraries: a three-day, two-night route between Penang and Port Klang, and a four-day, three-night cruise that includes Langkawi.
Passengers can look forward to Broadway-style entertainment, wellness and recreation facilities, shopping arcades, and family-friendly activities. Culinary offerings will cater to diverse palates, including extensive halal options alongside Chinese and international cuisine.
