KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, faced criticism in Parliament after Opposition MPs questioned his clarity and language skills during his wrap-up speech.
Pendang MP Datuk Awang Hashim called for an abrupt halt to Tiong’s presentation. He cited incoherence and a poor command of the Malay language, which he argued hindered his ability to understand key points about ministry policies. Awang suggested that Tiong’s replies be submitted in writing to ensure clarity in the Hansard record.

Meanwhile, Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal took his critique further, questioning Tiong’s commitment to Malaysia’s tourism interests. “Is Tiong Malaysia’s Tourism Minister, or is he acting on behalf of China?” Fayhsal asked, hinting at concerns over Tiong’s approach to tourism promotion and his perceived alignment with Chinese interests.
Tiong, appointed in December 2022, has faced scrutiny before, with some accusing him of not adequately addressing issues like promoting domestic tourism and improving industry stakeholder relations. While his supporters praise his grassroots approach, critics argue that his communication gaps undermine Malaysia’s representation on a global stage.
These debates underscore rising tensions in Malaysia’s Parliament over ministerial accountability and the effectiveness of key government leaders.
