Penang Celebrates Global Oral Healthcare Leadership at 10th ICDXV & WSI International Conference Opening Ceremony

GEORGE TOWN, 18 April 2025The 10th International College of Dentists (ICD) Section XV and World Stomatology Institute (WSI) International Conference and Induction Ceremony was hosted at the Setia SPICE Convention Centre this morning. The highly anticipated event drew dental professionals, healthcare leaders, policymakers, and international delegates from over a dozen countries, marking a significant milestone in the region’s healthcare and medical tourism calendar.

Graced by Penang Chief Minister YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, the ceremony officially launched the three-day global gathering, which places a spotlight on the future of oral healthcare, with this year’s theme “New Era of Digital AI Technology in Medicine and Dentistry.”

In his opening speech, Chow welcomed delegates from near and far, expressing Penang’s pride in hosting such a prestigious event. “This conference reflects the power of international collaboration in shaping the future of healthcare — not just in ideas but in tangible action,” he said, addressing a packed ballroom of local and international attendees.

The Chief Minister spoke proudly about the promising future AI brings to dentistry, envisioning real-time diagnostics, tele-dentistry, and mobile care as accessible tools that could bridge the healthcare gap, especially in Malaysia’s rural and underserved communities. “It’s not science fiction anymore; it’s here. And it can revolutionize how we deliver care across the country,” he said.

However, Chow also addressed pressing challenges within the sector, including the uneven distribution of dental practitioners and the growing concern of young graduates facing limited career placements in the public sector. He emphasized the importance of balanced national priorities, urging equal investment in healthcare sciences alongside STEM fields like engineering and IT. “We must rebalance our priorities if we truly want to build a resilient, future-ready healthcare system,” he declared.

The opening ceremony was also attended by YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy; Adjunct Professor Dato’ Dr. How Kim Chuan, Organizing Chairman and President of ICD Section XV and WSI; and Mr. Ashwin Gunasekeran, CEO of the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB), along with leaders from Malaysia’s top universities, international dental associations, and key sponsors.

In his remarks, Adjunct Professor Dato’ Dr. How Kim Chuan acknowledged the significance of uniting ICD and WSI on a single platform. “This conference is more than an academic gathering — it’s a declaration of unity, excellence, and progressive thinking. Penang is an ideal host, offering both heritage and innovation,” he shared.

The morning also featured a symbolic group photo session on stage with the Chief Minister and dignitaries, followed by a lively media Q&A session. Delegates praised the state’s commitment to fostering international partnerships and supporting continued professional education in oral healthcare.

Mr. Ashwin Gunasekeran reinforced Penang’s position as a sought-after destination for international conferences. “Events like this are about more than healthcare; they benefit our creative economy, hotels, and international image. We’re proud to welcome the world here to Penang,” he said.

Today’s opening marked the start of an event-packed program that will continue over the next two days, featuring plenary sessions by over 30 international speakers, scientific competitions, exhibitions, hands-on workshops, and two grand induction ceremonies. Special recognitions such as the ICD Honorary Fellowship and WSI Founding Fellow Awards are set to be presented to distinguished global leaders in oral health.

As the conference unfolds, it is expected to spark vital conversations, forge new partnerships, and spotlight Penang as a dynamic hub for healthcare innovation and knowledge exchange.
