GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Hill Festival 2025 (PHF2025) came to a meaningful close yesterday evening with its signature event Music on the Hill – East Meets West, bringing the curtain down on a four-day celebration of heritage, culture and environmental appreciation atop one of Penang’s most iconic landmarks.

Held at the historic Bellevue Hotel, the cultural performance brought together local talents in a cross-cultural musical presentation that captivated visitors with its serene hilltop setting and harmonious blend of East and West.

The closing ceremony was officiated by Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Wong Hon Wai, who noted that the festival has become an important annual occasion, not only for Penang Hill, but for the state as a whole.

“The festival raises greater awareness of Penang as a must-visit destination, rich in culture and heritage,” he said, adding that its growth over the years reflects Penang’s broader vision of promoting responsible, experience-based tourism.

Also in attendance were Air Itam assemblyman YB Joseph Ng Soon Siang, Pulau Pinang MOTAC Director Dr. Annuar Mohamad, and Tourism Malaysia Northern Region Director Encik Abdul Hadi Che Man, underscoring strong institutional support for the festival.

First introduced before Penang Hill was listed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2021, the festival has steadily evolved into a multi-day platform that promotes sustainable tourism, nature conservation and local artistry. This year’s edition featured documentary screenings, heritage tours, educational workshops and creative showcases.

Among the highlights was the premiere of Rising Above: Penang Hill’s Revival, a documentary chronicling the hill’s recovery from the 2017 landslides. Another standout was the PHF2025 Postcards Project, a collaboration with Tourism Malaysia and ATEC College, which produced illustrated postcards capturing the hill’s flora, fauna and cultural heritage.

The festival is organised by Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) and supported by various government agencies and partners. Through its growing range of activities, PHF continues to attract both domestic and international visitors, not only for its natural beauty, but as a place where education, culture, and sustainability meet.

As PHF2025 concluded, organisers thanked all attendees and expressed hopes to return stronger next year, reinforcing Penang Hill’s role as both a natural treasure and cultural landmark.
