Penang is to host the 23rd ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships in July 2025

GEORGE TOWN Malaysia will take center stage in the regional chess arena as Penang plays host to the 23rd ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships from 1st to 11th July 2025, marking a proud return of the prestigious event to the country.

The tournament, which will be held at Berjaya Penang Hotel, is expected to draw more than 500 players, officials, and supporters from over 20 national chess federations, including ASEAN countries and dialogue partners such as India, China, Russia, South Korea, Australia, Japan, and the United States.

Organized by the Penang Chess Association (PCA) on behalf of the Malaysian Chess Federation, this year’s edition is especially significant as it aligns with Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship under Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim—offering a platform to highlight regional unity, youth development, and cultural exchange through the timeless game of chess.

“This is not only a great honour for Penang but for Malaysia as a whole,” said YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy (PETACE), at the official press conference. “Whether you’re a seasoned player or just someone fascinated by the game, this is your moment to get involved.”

First inaugurated in 2000 in Vung Tau, Vietnam, the tournament has grown into one of the most anticipated youth and senior chess events in Asia. It rebranded in 2007 to become the ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships, reflecting its growing global participation beyond the ASEAN bloc.

The 2025 edition brings a landmark development: for the first time since 2019, FIDE (World Chess Federation) will reinstate direct international title awards—including the prestigious International Master (IM), Woman International Master (WIM), FIDE Master (FM), and Candidate Master (CM)—to winners of eligible categories. Notably, this includes new eligibility for seniors 50+ and 65+, acknowledging their vital role in the chess ecosystem.

Participants will compete across Standard, Rapid, and Blitz formats, in age categories ranging from Under-6 to Seniors 65+, affirming the tournament’s commitment to inclusivity and excellence across generations.

Beyond the competition, organizers aim to celebrate culture and camaraderie. One of the tournament’s most cherished traditions—Social Night—will once again see participants perform traditional dances and songs, creating a lively evening of cultural exchange and friendship.

Highlighting the event’s broader impact, Mr. Ashwin, Chief Executive Officer of the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB), noted the tournament’s economic and social significance:

“This event alone is expected to generate an economic impact of RM1.02 million. But more importantly, it leaves behind a legacy—inspiring young minds, building cross-cultural friendships, and showcasing Malaysian hospitality at its finest.”

Visitors and chess fans will also get the chance to immerse themselves in the action. Spectators are welcome to observe the first five minutes of each game in person before live broadcasts take over via Lichess, YouTube, and other platforms.

“Chess is more than a game,” added Wong. “It’s a battle of wits, a test of foresight and patience. It’s where strategy meets story—and every move writes a new chapter.”

He also encouraged aspiring players to register before the 21st of June 2025 deadline, calling the tournament “a once-in-a-lifetime chance to earn international titles and be part of chess history.”

Founded in 1969 and celebrating its golden jubilee in 2022, the Penang Chess Association has been a pioneering force in regional chess. Its impressive legacy includes hosting the first Asian Team Chess Championship (1974), the Penang Chess Festival, and the Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship (2024).

As Penang prepares to welcome chess players from around the globe, 2025 ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships stands not just as a sporting event but as a celebration of talent, unity, and the enduring spirit of competition.
