Penang, 24 September 2024— The Penang Pacific West Dragon Boat Club was officially sent off at a press conference held in Bilik Ruby, Komtar, as they prepare to compete in the prestigious 15th Asian Dragon Boat Championship in Hong Kong. The event featured remarks from YB Wong Hon Wai, the Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, who celebrated the team’s impressive track record since its establishment in 2009.
In his speech, Wong highlighted the club’s transformation into a powerhouse of teamwork and resilience. He noted that the Pacific West team embodies unity, drawing paddlers from diverse backgrounds to foster a spirit of camaraderie that has propelled them to numerous victories. Their training along the picturesque Tanjong Bungah waterfront and the demanding waters of the Straits of Malacca has honed their skills and determination.

With other notable finishes across the years, including multiple championships from 2017 to 2019, the team’s relentless dedication to the sport shines through. Despite challenges posed by the pandemic, their return to competitive form has been nothing short of inspiring.
As the Pacific West Dragon Boat Club sets their sights on Hong Kong, Wong emphasized that it carries the hopes and pride of the entire Penang community. “Paddle strong, paddle together,” he urged, reminding them of the spirit that has brought them this far. The excitement is palpable as the community looks forward to celebrating their continued successes on the international stage.
