BUTTERWORTH: The Penang tourism landscape welcomed a new addition this morning with the launch of the Penang River Cruise along Sungai Juru in Seberang Perai.
The attraction was unveiled by the state tourism and creative economy committee chairman, Wong Hon Wai, who described it as a milestone in the state’s efforts to diversify tourism offerings on the mainland.
“Today, we are adding a new dimension to Penang’s tourism appeal, the serene beauty of nature. The Penang River Cruise is more than just a ride; it is the rise of a new star in Seberang Perai’s tourism landscape,” he said at the launch.

Wong said the product would place Penang on the international map of river tourism experiences by highlighting the global popularity of river cruises.
“River cruises are recognised and sought after worldwide. Penang now joins this league with a cruise that showcases our unique natural and cultural heritage,” he added.
The 15km journey takes passengers through mangroves, riverside villages, and paddy fields before reaching where Sungai Juru meets the Straits of Malacca. Along the way, visitors can spot wildlife such as silvered leaf monkeys, black giant squirrels, eagles, woodpeckers, and shorebirds.

On calm days, the river reflects its surroundings in what is known as the “Mirror of the Sky”, creating a picture-like scene of cottages, fishing boats, and lush greenery. The cruise also passes cockle and fish farms, highlighting Seberang Perai’s agricultural and aquaculture traditions.

Guests at the launch were treated to a two-hour cruise to experience the new attraction. Among those present were Berapit assemblyman Heng Lee Lee, Bukit Tengah assemblyman Gooi Hsiao Leung, Penang Global Tourism CEO, Ooi Chok Yan, Penang MOTAC director, Dr Annuar Mohamed, Tourism Malaysia, northern region director, Mohd Hadi Che Man, Auto-City Managing director Gary Teoh and Penang River Cruise director Cool Koe.
Wong said the initiative is expected to inject fresh vitality into the mainland’s tourism sector, drawing both domestic and international visitors while spurring economic growth.
The Penang River Cruise, with its mix of eco-tourism and cultural experiences, is tipped to be a crowd-puller during sunset, when the waterway turns into a shimmering canvas of colours.
