Penang State Government Partners with Renowned Artist for Murals Restoration

George Town, Penang – The Penang State Government has announced an exciting collaboration with Lithuanian street artist Ernest Zacharevic to restore three of his iconic murals in George Town. Located on Armenian Street, Ah Quee Street, and Cannon Street, these murals are celebrated symbols of Penang’s rich street art scene and cultural heritage.

Since their creation during the George Town Festival in 2012, Zacharevic’s murals have drawn international attention, with pieces like the beloved ‘Children on a Bicycle’ becoming landmarks that attract tourists from around the globe. These artworks have played a crucial role in showcasing Penang as a vibrant hub for both colonial heritage and contemporary art.

When George Town was included in Lonely Planet’s Ed Bartlett-curated book Street Art in 2017, it further cemented its reputation as one of the best places to see street art. The book showcases 42 places noted for their amazing street art, and George Town is the only Asian city to gain this honour, among legendary works from artists like Banksy and Invader.

But as time has worn these paintings down, locals and tourists are growing increasingly concerned about their slow degradation. The Penang State Government contacted Zacharevic in response to repeated public requests for restoration, and they came to an agreement for him to come back to revitalize these important artefacts.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ernest Zacharevic for his commitment to this restoration project,” said a spokesperson for the Penang State Government. “His work has left an indelible mark on our city, and we are confident that the revitalized murals will continue to inspire visitors and residents alike.”

In addition to preserving these pieces of art for future generations, this restoration project seeks to inspire more local and foreign artists to participate in Penang’s burgeoning arts community. The Penang State Government is still a staunch supporter of the arts and culture and works to create an atmosphere that encourages creativity.

With complete support from the state government, the restoration project is scheduled to start shortly. Locals and art lovers are excited about the paintings’ restoration, which will guarantee that they improve George Town’s cultural environment for many years to come.
