Serian’s Hidden 60m Waterfall Expected to Become New Tourism Jewel

KUCHING: A recently discovered 60-metre waterfall situated deep inside the mountain forests of Kampung Tarat Mawang, Serian, is expected to be the next big tourism attraction for the district.

Serian District Council (MDS) chairman Dato Peter Minos said during a recent visit to the site with the village chiefs and villagers, they found this beautiful, majestic, and true gem waterfall, which stands 200 feet high, to be one of the most fascinating natural attractions in the district for many years.

“The waterfall is in a nice location in the middle of a forest. It is also incredibly accessible as it requires only a 30-minute walk from the village edge, which is such a fantastic concept for future tourism development,” he said.

There is also considerable support from the local community leaders, who formally requested that MDS develop the site further and fully make it an attraction.

Some proposals being contemplated include the development of a 10-door longhouse, public amenities and a canteen. He mentioned this could make this new waterfall site just as worthwhile or comparable to the famous Ranchan Waterfall.

The 60-metre (200-foot) waterfall is surrounded by beautiful, pristine forests, which Dato Minos believes adds to this unique attraction and is the differentiating factor from other natural attractions in Sarawak.

In order to advance the project, MDS is pursuing funding and is collaborating with the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), headed by Dato Sri Roland Sagah, who oversees the area.

Minos also revealed that eight tourism-focused projects have been identified throughout Serian, with an aspiration that all could be launched by 2026 or 2027.

“If everything goes to plan, Serian will be a fantastic destination and a true tourism paradise,” he said, calling the undertaking both challenging and worthwhile.
