Shenzhen Airlines Launches Direct Flights Between Shenzhen and Penang

Penang, Malaysia – Penang International Airport today celebrated the arrival of Shenzhen Airlines’ inaugural direct flight from Shenzhen to Penang.

Penang State Executive Councilor for Tourism and Creative Economy, Wong Hon Wai said the new route marks a significant enhancement in Penang’s international connectivity, promising to boost tourism and economic ties between the two cities.

“The launch of this direct flight route is an exciting development, further enhancing Penang’s international connectivity,” he said at the launching ceremony today.

Flight ZH335 departed from Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport at 8.05 and arrived in Penang at noon.

This thrice-weekly service operates on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays with Airbus A320 aircraft.

Wong added that the inaugural flight’s arrival coincides with several key events in Penang, including the Penang Bon Odori Festival and the final days of the George Town Festival 2024.

“These events offer passengers a chance to immerse themselves in Penang’s rich cultural and artistic offerings.

“This development is part of broader efforts to strengthen air connectivity between Malaysia and China, as the two countries celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations,” he said.

He added that several airlines, namely China Southern Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, Xiamen Airlines, and Cathay Pacific, are also increasing their services to Penang, further enhancing the city’s accessibility.

China is Penang’s third-largest tourist market, and the number of Chinese tourists visiting Penang has surged significantly in 2024. The Malaysian government’s extension of the visa-free policy for Chinese nationals until the end of 2026 is expected to further boost tourism.

Also present at the welcoming ceremony was Tourism Malaysia Northern Region director, Shahrul Aman, Dr Annuar Mohamed (Penang MOTAC director), and Ms Carolyn Leong (Penang MATTA chairman) among others.
