Teeing up for tourism

THE first-ever Tourism Golf Malaysia – Amateur Golf Tournament is set to position Malaysia as one of the world’s top golf destinations for travellers.

This two-day event, scheduled to draw 240 local and foreign golfers, will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) in Kuala Lumpur on July 27 and 28.

The tournament would establish Malaysia as a year-round golfing sanctuary, according to the chairman of the tournament organizing committee Datuk Richard Lee.

“We aim to promote golf tourism in Malaysia because the country has beautiful golf courses in the middle of our cities.

“During the launch at KLGCC, Kuala Lumpur, we also want to showcase our beautiful courses to international tourists,” Lee stated.

The tournament’s director-general, Manoharan Periasamy of Tourism Malaysia, predicted that attendees would become familiar with the country’s abundant golf courses.

“The country boasts over 200 golf courses, several of which are regarded as top destinations for Chinese visitors.

“Golfers from all over the world are expected to attend this event, as other nations have been using golf tournaments to promote tourism,” he stated.

The event not only promotes tourism but also raises money for charity, with RM20,000 designated for the welfare of the KLGCC caddies.

For RM8,000 for each flight of four or eight slots over two days, interested parties can sign up. This price covers green fees, shared buggies and caddies, sweets, beverages, lunch, and supper.

Since many players don’t have official handicaps, the tournament will adopt the method 36 format, a same-day/one-day golf handicapping method that’s frequently used for corporate outings and charity events.

The latest TaylorMade Qi 10 drivers as well as airline tickets or travel vouchers will be among the golf goodies that winners can take home.

A Mazda automobile is also waiting for any golfer who completes a hole-in-one on July 28.

There are a few seats available, so those who are interested are asked to register by giving 012-261 8484 a call.

HSBC Malaysia, Visa, Mazda, KLGCC, Air Asia, Batik Air, BMW, Luen Heng, Carlsberg, MST Golf, and CIT Travel are among the sponsors of the event. Star Media Group Bhd and The Edge are the media partners.

Additionally present were Tan Sri Jagannath Derek, the non-independent executive director of Sime Darby Property Bhd, and Thad Foo, the secretary of the Tourism Golf Malaysia Tournament. Adam Calver, general manager (leisure) of KLGCC, Steven Sabapathy, and KP Low, a member of the tournament committee.
