Tourism Malaysia welcomes the new Quanzhou-Kuala Lumpur air link

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has strengthened its tourism and air travel ties with China following the launch of Xiamen Airlines’ new direct flight between Quanzhou and Kuala Lumpur.

The inaugural flight, MF8661, landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 at about 2.45 pm on Wednesday, marking the start of regular services between the two cities.

Operating four times a week using a Boeing 738, the service connects Quanzhou Jinjiang International Airport (JJN) and KLIA. The aircraft has 169 seats, eight in business class and 161 in economy.

Tourism Malaysia Deputy Director-General (Promotion II) Samuel Lee said the new route would help strengthen tourism flows between Malaysia and southern China.

“This launch is significant in enhancing the growing tourism relations between Malaysia and China,” he said. “It not only improves accessibility for travellers from Quanzhou and nearby regions, but also supports our goal to position Malaysia as a top travel destination in Southeast Asia.”

Lee said Tourism Malaysia looked forward to welcoming more visitors from Quanzhou to experience the country’s rich culture, natural beauty and diverse attractions.

From January to August 2025, Malaysia recorded 3.3 million tourist arrivals from China, up 27.5% compared with the same period last year.

The steady growth highlights Malaysia’s appeal among Chinese travellers, who are drawn to its lively cities, food scene, islands and heritage destinations.

The new direct link by Xiamen Airlines is expected to make travel smoother and more convenient, especially for tourists from China’s Fujian province.

Tourism Malaysia said it would continue working with international airlines, airport authorities and industry partners to boost global air connectivity and promote Malaysia as a preferred destination.

The agency added that improved access and more flight options would help sustain the country’s tourism recovery and deepen bilateral ties with China.
