Tourism may be a powerful catalyst for understanding and harmony

KUCHING, Aug 7 — Tourism can be a powerful tool for fostering global peace and understanding, according to Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Malaysia’s Tourism Minister. At the International Conference on Responsible Tourism and Hospitality (ICRTH) 2024, Abdul Karim highlighted tourism’s dual role in driving economic growth and enhancing social cohesion.

He emphasized that responsible tourism supports democracy, social justice, and sustainable development. Abdul Karim also noted that tourism’s potential for peace is significant, urging deeper exploration and integration into societal transformations.

Sarawak’s commitment to responsible tourism is evident in its Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS2030), aiming to boost eco-tourism and community empowerment. The recent UNESCO World Heritage Site designation of Niah Cave underscores Sarawak’s dedication to preserving its cultural and natural heritage.

The ICRTH 2024, themed “Tourism and Peace: Promoting Peaceful and Inclusive Societies for Sustainable Development,” attracted global tourism leaders, including delegates from Malaysia, Cambodia, and the UK. The next ICRTH will be held in the Philippines in 2025.
