Tourism Ministry to Propose Broader Tax Relief for Domestic Travel – Tiong

KUALA LUMPUR – The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) will hold discussions with the Ministry of Finance to explore the possibility of expanding the existing special income tax relief for domestic tourism, said its minister, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

Tiong said the proposal aims to include accommodation at registered tourism premises and transport services under the tax relief, in addition to the current eligible categories.

“MOTAC appreciates the Government’s approval of the RM1,000 individual income tax relief for domestic tourism spending,” he said in a statement today.

“However, we have suggested that the incentive be broadened to cover accommodation and transport to further stimulate domestic travel,” he added.

Tiong noted that tax incentives come under the purview of the Finance Ministry.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had earlier announced the special relief as part of efforts to boost local tourism ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026. At present, the tax relief applies to entrance fees for local tourist attractions and cultural programmes.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Tourism Federation president Dr Sri Ganesh Michiel expressed hope that hotel stays would be included under the expanded scope, noting that such a move would further encourage Malaysians to travel domestically.

“The tax rebate will motivate more families to plan short local getaways, thereby supporting the domestic tourism industry,” he said, as quoted by The Star.
