For the first time, Sibu, Sarawak, will host the Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry’s annual New Year countdown event.
In a statement to the media, its Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing made this announcement.
The event, which has the theme “Sibu Carnival: Celebrating 2025 Together,” will be held at the Azman Hashim Community Sports Centre in Sibu Jaya from December 27 to December 31.
Ten thousand people are anticipated for the celebration, which combines entertainment, culture, and food to welcome the new year.
Tiong emphasized that the event’s main goal was to exhibit Sarawak’s diverse cultural history.
“This isn’t just a New Year’s party.
It serves as a venue to promote our cultural history and help out local food merchants. “Everyone is welcome to join us,” he stated.
A range of specialities from the Chinese, Iban, and Malay populations, as well as contributions from other groups, will be available at around 100 vendors.
Malay, Iban, and Chinese sellers are allotted 30% of the stalls, while other communities are given 10%.
There will be a stunning fireworks show and performances by Malaysian artists on December 31.
Tiong emphasized how important these kinds of gatherings are for promoting cross-cultural interaction and strengthening the local economy.
Sibu is the ideal location since it offers a dynamic representation of Malaysia’s ethnic variety.
“The carnival will exemplify Sibu’s spirit of unity.”
He went on to say that the carnival would also be used as a stage to advertise the Visit Malaysia 2026 and ASEAN 2025 projects, highlighting Sarawak’s contribution to both domestic and foreign travel campaigns.
