GEORGE TOWN: Batik Air will expand its operations in Penang with two new direct international routes from Medan and Singapore starting December 8, 2025, further strengthening Penang’s position as a key aviation hub in northern Malaysia.
The announcement followed a meeting between Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy (PETACE) Wong Hon Wai and Batik Air’s Head of Sales, Mr Arasu, where both parties discussed the airline’s expansion plans and opportunities to boost Penang’s connectivity.
According to Batik Air’s latest schedule, the Medan–Penang route will operate daily, with flights departing Penang at 5.45 pm and arriving in Medan at 5.45 pm local time. The return flight will depart Medan at 6.45 pm and arrive in Penang at 8.40 pm.
Similarly, the Singapore–Penang route will also operate daily, departing Penang at 8.20 am and arriving in Singapore at 9.45 am. At the same time, the return leg leaves Singapore at 3.20 pm and arrives in Penang at 4.45 pm.
Batik Air is also planning to expand its domestic network in 2026, introducing new direct services from Kota Kinabalu and Kuching to Penang. The airline said the move would strengthen connectivity between East Malaysia and the northern region.
In addition, a new charter service between Kunming, China, and Penang is expected to begin in late October 2025, creating a key link between Penang and southwest China to promote two-way tourism and cultural exchange.
Wong said the state government welcomes Batik Air’s confidence in Penang’s tourism potential and remains committed to supporting efforts that enhance air accessibility and visitor arrivals.
Penang continues to attract strong interest from key regional markets Indonesia, China, and Singapore, which remain among the top international arrivals at Penang International Airport.
