Penang, 28 October 2024—In a landmark move to enhance tourism exchange, Penang and Chongqing travel agencies today signed a historic collaboration agreement at the Eastin Hotel in Penang. The event welcomed distinguished officials, travel industry representatives, and esteemed guests to celebrate this burgeoning partnership.
YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy (PETACE), delivered the keynote address, highlighting the significance of the agreement, which marks a milestone in Malaysia-China relations as the two nations commemorate 50 years of diplomatic ties. “This partnership represents a new chapter in tourism collaboration between Penang and Chongqing, building on the successes of our recent tourism roadshow in Chongqing,” Wong noted.
The collaboration is significant as direct charter flights between Penang and Chongqing, operated by Firefly Airlines, began on July 23, 2024. With three flights weekly on Boeing 737 aircraft, this connection has already sparked increased travel between the two destinations. With Chongqing’s population of 34 million, the direct flights provide an exciting opportunity to introduce Penang’s diverse offerings—ranging from cultural heritage to world-renowned street food—to a vast new audience.
During the roadshow in Chongqing, Penang’s heritage sites, beach resorts, and culinary delights captivated local tourism leaders, underscoring the mutual appeal between the two regions. The signing ceremony formalizes this enthusiasm, bringing together three major Chongqing travel agencies: Chongqing Wenhua Tourism, Chongqing Leyou International, and Chongqing Ctrip International, to promote travel and cultural exchange.
In his remarks, Wong emphasized Penang’s draw in niche tourism segments, including health, business, and wedding tourism, which continue to attract visitors from China. Recent data, showing a 226% increase in Chinese tourist arrivals to Penang in 2024 compared to the previous year, further supports the potential for growth in these areas.
In addition to Chongqing, Penang now has direct connections to seven other Chinese cities, establishing a comprehensive flight network that is expected to grow with upcoming expansions to Penang’s international airport. This expanded connectivity is anticipated to further drive tourism and bolster business ties.
The agreement reflects a shared commitment to a long-term partnership that will not only elevate the tourism sectors of both regions but also deepen cultural understanding and friendship. YB Wong Hon Wai concluded with a message of gratitude to Chongqing travel partners, expressing optimism for a successful and enduring collaboration. “Today’s agreement is a testament to our shared vision, and we look forward to a fruitful journey ahead, united by friendship and mutual benefit.”
This strategic collaboration signals Penang’s increasing role as a key player in Southeast Asia’s tourism landscape, as it opens doors to new markets and fosters cross-cultural ties.
