PORT KLANG: Selangor’s maritime tourism is preparing to enter a new era as China’s Piano Land cruise ship prepares to make Port Klang Cruise Terminal (PKCT) its home port by the end of this year—a move set to anchor international tourism growth for the state.
The 12-deck luxury liner, which accommodates up to 2,000 passengers, is poised to become a cornerstone of Selangor’s strategy to attract global travellers and reposition Port Klang as a cruise tourism hub in Southeast Asia.
Tourism Selangor CEO Chua Yee Ling described the ship’s permanent docking as a “milestone development” that underscores the port’s readiness and appeal for high-volume cruise traffic.
“PKCT’s selection as the home port for Piano Land affirms the terminal’s world-class infrastructure and potential to support premium cruise experiences,” she said during the “Surprising Selangor” Media & Influencer Hi-Tea 2025.
However, it’s not just about attracting international tourists—Tourism Selangor is also focused on enhancing the visitor experience from the moment they disembark. One key initiative is the development of a seamless transfer route from PKCT directly to the charming fishing village of Pulau Ketam, bypassing the currently inconvenient transit via the South Port Terminal Jetty.
“To create a more immersive and effortless journey, we’re upgrading infrastructure and designing exclusive packages that allow tourists to travel straight from the cruise terminal to Pulau Ketam,” Chua said, adding that a dedicated jetty at PKCT has been refurbished for this purpose.
This enhancement ties into broader plans to strengthen tourism offerings around Klang and Shah Alam, blending cultural heritage with nature-based attractions. These short-term packages are part of Selangor’s broader push to diversify its appeal and tap into growing interest in regional maritime travel.
Meanwhile, the upcoming Selangor Travel Fair 2025—scheduled for July 26 and 27 at Central Market in Kuala Lumpur—is expected to add further momentum. The event will feature over 30 tourism exhibitors, cultural performances, and the official launch of the state’s new tourism anthem and promotional video, “Selangor Kan Ada!”
Selangor Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said the state remains committed to hitting its ambitious target of welcoming eight million tourists this year, with an estimated tourism revenue of RM11.2 billion.
As of March 2025, Selangor had already recorded 1.77 million visitor arrivals, 72% of them domestic. The state has consistently led the country in domestic tourism, notching 34.5 million local visitors in 2024 alone.
“With strategic initiatives like the Piano Land and enhanced travel experiences, we’re positioning Selangor as a dynamic gateway for both local and international tourists,” said Ng.
As the tides shift in Malaysia’s tourism landscape, Selangor is steering confidently ahead—cruise by cruise, traveller by traveller—toward a thriving and connected future.
