Singapore’s Scoot keen to fly to Subang Airport

With its Embraer E190-E2 aircraft, Singapore Airlines’ low-cost carrier Scoot is looking to expand its presence in the Malaysian market by offering flights to Subang Airport.

Leslie Thng, the chief executive officer of the airline, stated that before choosing to fly to Subang Airport, Scoot is waiting for the airport to permit the restart of jet operations.

“Subang Airport is one that we would be interested in but it depends on when the airport is open for jet operations.”

“Right now, it’s limited to turboprop (aircraft) operations,” he stated during today’s media briefing in this location.

Business Times was informed on March 14 by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) that narrowbody aircraft operations at Subang Airport, which is being enlarged to accommodate more passengers and jet operations, would start as early as June of this year.

26 years have passed since Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) became the new location for all jet operations in 1998.

Leslie stated that because of its proximity to Singapore, Malaysia is a significant market for Scoot.

In addition, he mentioned that Scoot has made Sibu its new Malaysian destination after the first Embraer E190-E2 aircraft arrived there last month.

“Scoot has found that Malaysia is a valuable market because we are neighbours.” We chose to deploy the E2 there because we view Malaysia as a whole market, Leslie continued.

Additionally, Scoot plans to travel to Koh Samui, Miri, Kuantan, Hat Yai, and Krabi using the E2 aircraft.

Under a lease arrangement with Florida-based aircraft lessor Azorra, the budget carrier based in Singapore has ordered nine new Embraer E190-E2 commercial aircraft for delivery in 2023.

Two of the nine aircraft have been delivered to Scoot; the remaining three should arrive by the end of 2024, and the remaining one should arrive in 2025.
