Penang to Host International Butterfly Conference for the Third Time

Penang, 28 August 2024 – Entopia has announced that Penang will once again host the International Conference of Butterfly Exhibitors and Suppliers (ICBES) from 4th to 7th November 2024. This marks the third time the city has hosted the prestigious event, following successful conferences in 2000 and 2009. The conference, expected to draw nearly 100 participants from 19 countries, will conclude with a post-conference tour to Sungai Relau National Park in Pahang from 8th to 10th November 2024.

The four-day event will kick off at the Ascott Gurney Penang, transitioning to Entopia, Penang’s acclaimed butterfly sanctuary, for the final day. The conference will bring together experts and enthusiasts from around the world, including representatives from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and several other countries. The event aims to foster knowledge exchange, explore new ideas, and promote collaborations in the field of butterfly conservation and exhibition.

Penang’s Chief Minister, YAB Chow Kon Yeow, and the State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Wong Hon Wai, will officially open the conference on 4th November. The conference will begin with a Welcome Cocktail on 3rd November, providing an opportunity for networking and collaboration.

“Penang, known for its rich biodiversity and commitment to conservation, is a perfect setting for this important gathering,” said Joseph Goh, CEO of Entopia. He emphasized that the event would offer unique opportunities to advance the collective mission of butterfly conservation.

Conference participants will have the chance to experience Penang’s cultural and natural attractions, including a George Town Heritage Tour, a visit to Penang Hill, and a hike at Penang National Park. The event will also highlight the island’s renowned culinary scene, offering delegates a taste of Penang’s famous hawker delights.

A highlight of the event will be the Opening Dinner at the iconic Hin Bus Depot on 4th November, supported by the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB). This dinner will serve as a cultural exchange and celebration, further enhancing the international camaraderie of the conference.

Penang State Executive Councillor YB Wong Hon Wai expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “The ICBES 2024 is a significant event for Penang, showcasing our state’s commitment to biodiversity and conservation.”

PCEB CEO Ashwin Gunasekeran noted the event’s economic impact, estimating a boost of RM 1.45 million to the local economy. “This conference is a prime example of how Penang continues to attract high-value, high-impact events that drive economic growth while showcasing our state’s unique offerings,” he added.

Following the conference, delegates will embark on a tour to Sungai Relau National Park, offering them a closer look at Malaysia’s natural beauty.

Entopia is also set to unveil several new attractions later this year. These include a temporary exhibit on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) from 18th September to 1st October, a Wings of Lepidoptera exhibition in November, and the world’s first Biofluorescent Garden, Natureland By Night, in mid-November. These initiatives will further solidify Penang’s status as a hub for nature-based tourism.
