GEORGE TOWN: Ukraine’s Independence Day was commemorated yesterday in a solemn ceremony at the office of the Ukrainian Honorary Consul in Green Hall here.
About 50 guests, including diplomats and business leaders, attended the gathering hosted by Ukraine’s Honorary Consul in Penang, Datuk Seri Chuah Kim Seah.
The event began with the national anthems of Malaysia and Ukraine, followed by Chuah’s address highlighting the significance of the day.

“Independence Day is more than a historical milestone – it is a celebration of the indomitable spirit of the Ukrainian people,” he said, recalling the country’s declaration of sovereignty on Aug 24, 1991.
He noted the geographical distance between Penang and Ukraine but said Malaysians stood in solidarity with Ukrainians during these difficult times. Chuah also expressed gratitude to Malaysia and the global diplomatic community for their continued support.

Guests later raised a toast to friendship and resilience before watching a video on the challenges faced by Ukrainians amid the ongoing conflict.
Those present included Ukraine’s Second Secretary for Consular Affairs in Kuala Lumpur, Artem Blyzniuk, Japan’s Consul-General in Penang, H.E. Machida Shinya, as well as representatives from Germany, Poland, Pakistan, Fiji and Indonesia.
Among the business leaders were Hunza Properties founder Dato Seri Khor Teng Tong, Dato Jeffrey Chew and Penang Port Commission CEO Dato V. Sasedharan.
The commemoration ended with a message of hope for peace and a future free from conflict, underscoring the close ties between Malaysia and Ukraine.
