This morning, the Crowne Plaza Penang Straits City marked its grand opening, making history as the first IHG-branded hotel in Penang. The five-star hotel, situated at the heart of Butterworth, represents a significant milestone in the flagship Straits waterfront development.
Penang Hyperlocal report that the hotel aims to elevate the hospitality landscape in the region, providing top-tier accommodations and services for both tourists and business travellers alike.
Ms Shi’ai Liang, Senior Director of development of IHG, Ms Tan Hwei Yee, Chief Executive Officer of STC Property Management Sdn Bhd, and Ms Chew Gek Khim, Executive Chairman of Straits Trading, were among those in attendance at the ceremony earlier this morning.
Other directors, government leaders, and business visitors joined them.

This is not just an infrastructure development. To support Butterworth’s long-term growth and vibrancy, Straits City aims to create a vibrant urban environment where communities, businesses, and innovation coexist. “as a place to live, work, and play,” Chew stated in his introductory remarks.
As the project integrates smart technology like intelligence-driven security systems and internet-of-things solutions that increase energy efficiency with environmentally sensitive infrastructure, sustainability is at the heart of Straits City’s concept.
To promote a sustainable and active lifestyle, additional features such as pedestrian-friendly sidewalks will be incorporated into the development whenever practical.
Later, Chew signed the digital plaque commemorating the formal opening among VIP visitors.
A tour of the hotel’s amenities and the Straits City Concept Center was also given to the guests.
In the meantime, the 40-acre Crowne Plaza Penang Straits City and Straits Galleria is the first of ten phases that are expected to be finished by 2038.
