Selangor is considering a new tax on tourists to boost tourism growth

The state government is considering levying a new tax on visitors to Selangor as a long-term measure to support the expansion and sustainability of the state’s tourism sector.

According to a statement from Ng Suee Lim, head of the Selangor local government and tourism committee, this will bring in more money for the travel and tourism industry.

He told reporters, “However, this is still under discussion among the state executive committee members to iron out the details,” during the Selangor State Assembly on Monday, November 18, at the Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam.

Ng stated that to raise more money, the tax would probably be levied on lodging providers like hotels.

“This money would support Tourism Selangor’s numerous initiatives to boost state tourism and improve current amenities for guests to enjoy.

Other states, such as Perak and Pahang, have introduced similar charges, so visitors won’t find them onerous—perhaps a few ringgit, depending on their lodging.

He added that the concept is still under discussion. “It will be a win-win situation where the state can intensify tourism promotion and continue to upgrade existing facilities,” he said.

It would be challenging to impose taxes on homestay operators, according to Ng.

“Therefore, we encourage the homestay operators to apply for a permit with Tourism Malaysia as many are operating without a permit,” he stated – The Star
