Penang —The launch of a direct flight service between Chennai and Penang has been announced by IndiGo Airlines. This marks a significant turning point in the development of Malaysia and India. Tickets can be bought on the official IndiGo website, and the service will be available beginning December 21, 2024.
YB Wong Hon Wai, the Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, was thrilled about the new route and thought it would significantly strengthen Penang’s tourism and economic sectors. “This direct link is vital as it will bring a lot of travel business and culture between Penang and Chennai. This will improve economic and cultural interactions in greater depth,” he noted.
Growing Connections with India
The new route follows strategic efforts undertaken by Mr. Wong in conjunction with the Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB), who earlier this year toured key cities in India including Chennai marketing Penang as a destination for Holiday/ MICE-Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions, Marketing tourism. A meeting with Tamil Nadu’s tourism minister and IndiGo Airlines during the trip provided the basis for this direct flight.
“This route is a symbol of the fruitful partnership between Penang and India. The Penang government and the State Tourism Office have welcomed this development, saying it opens doors to new opportunities for growth and collaboration.
