Cambodia Targets Muslim Tourism Market Through Indonesian Partnership

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia, is stepping up efforts to tap into the fast-growing Muslim tourism market through a new partnership with Indonesia, as part of broader moves to diversify visitor sources and strengthen the long-term resilience of its tourism sector.

Tourism Minister Huot Hak recently collaborated with Indonesian Ambassador to Cambodia Santo Darmosumarto in filming a promotional video showcasing Cambodia as a Muslim-friendly destination that is warm, safe and welcoming. The video was filmed at Preah Reach Troap Mountain, also known as Udong Mountain, a historic site symbolising the long-standing coexistence of Buddhism and Islam in the country.

The initiative reflects Cambodia’s growing readiness to attract Muslim travellers, particularly from Southeast Asia, in line with efforts to reduce dependence on traditional tourism markets while promoting a more inclusive and sustainable tourism industry.

“This collaboration is a rare and valuable opportunity for Cambodia’s tourism sector,” Hak said.

“It demonstrates Cambodia’s preparedness to seize new opportunities and diversify tourism markets, especially the Muslim tourism segment, which has strong potential to complement our existing international markets,” he added.

Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, is viewed by Cambodian authorities as a key gateway to the wider Muslim travel market.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, the joint promotional video highlights not only Cambodia’s tourism attractions but also its cultural openness and religious harmony factors that are increasingly important to Muslim travellers. The initiative aligns with Cambodia’s push for sustainable, inclusive and resilient tourism development as the sector continues to adapt to evolving regional travel trends.

Ambassador Santo said the collaboration reflects shared values and strong people-to-people ties between Cambodia and Indonesia, while encouraging Indonesian travellers to consider Cambodia as a welcoming destination.

Located about 40 kilometres from Phnom Penh in Ponhea Leu district, Kandal province, Preah Reach Troap Mountain is one of Cambodia’s most significant historical sites. In addition to its Buddhist heritage, the area is closely associated with the traditions and customs of Cambodian Muslim communities, making it a symbolic location for promoting interfaith harmony.

The naturally landscaped mountain is a popular spot among both domestic and international visitors, renowned for its scenic views, historical significance, and tranquil surroundings.

The ministry said similar initiatives will continue as Cambodia seeks to broaden its tourism portfolio and strengthen its position within the regional travel market, particularly among ASEAN Muslim-majority countries – The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
