Penang, 7 July 2025- Gurney Bay Hotel, a PARKROYAL Partner Hotel, officially launched its Penang Heritage Month, turning its property into a cultural hub for residents and guests alike throughout July. The celebration, which is based on the island’s vibrant traditions and multicultural heritage, was unveiled on 6 July with a night of high-energy performances, food, and community engagement.
The launch event was attended by dignitaries, captains of industry, and members of the media who gathered to witness traditional dances celebrating Penang’s rich cultural tapestry — including a dazzling Nyonya performance and Malay classical dances spanning the generations. The launch event opened the way for a series of heritage-themed activities aimed at propelling Penang’s living culture into the spotlight.

General Manager Benny Chung called the initiative a tribute to Penang’s soul — its people, traditions, and stories — and reaffirmed the hotel’s role as a community space where culture is not only preserved but celebrated. Guests enjoyed a Nasi Kandar-themed buffet dinner following the launch, showcasing the culinary multiculturalism that is so much a part of Penang’s identity.
For July, the hotel, in partnership with the Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC), is presenting an artisan market offering handicrafts and traditional items made by local women entrepreneurs. The lobby is transformed into a heritage craftsmanship showcase every weekend, where culture is not only displayed but also sold.
Other than the exhibition, Gurney Bay Hotel is also offering a series of immersive cultural experiences, including workshops and demonstrations that range from the art of beaded shoe-making to traditional games like Cherki and Congkak. These are not just for entertainment, but to have a better appreciation of the traditions that compose Penang’s communities.
Food is still the star of the heritage festivities. A weekend rotating buffet at The Café features signature Penang flavours, and a limited-time Nyonya Tiffin Set — offered daily — interprets homestyle Peranakan cuisine for the modern dining table. With dishes like Prawn Curry Delight and Nasi Ulam with Fried Chicken, the spread brings back the nostalgic tastes of a shared culinary past.
The Penang Heritage Month promotion at Gurney Bay Hotel is not so much a calendar of events as an open invitation to get reacquainted with the island’s cultural heritage. By blending tradition with hospitality, the hotel is offering visitors a rare opportunity to encounter heritage not as spectators, but as a part of it.
