Kepong MP warns scrapping 24-hour eatery licences will affect food sales, tourism

MALAYSIA – The country’s economic activity may decline and jobs may be lost as a result of the 24-hour restaurant operating license being eliminated, according to Kepong DAP MP Lim Lip Eng.

He stated that because they bring in money from both food sales and tourism, 24-hour restaurants are important to Malaysia’s economy.

“It would result in employment losses and a decline in economic activity if they were prohibited.

In a statement released today, Lim stated, “These restaurants also provide accessibility and convenience to people with a variety of schedules, such as late-shift workers, visitors arriving at odd hours, and people leading non-traditional lifestyles.”

His comments follow the Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) petition to remove the 24-hour restaurant operation license, which the Health Ministry is now debating.

The call was made by CAP, which justified it by saying that it would help Malaysians lead healthier lifestyles and lessen the harmful impacts of eating late.

Furthermore, according to Lim, late-night restaurants play a significant role as social hubs where people congregate on the weekends or after work to strengthen relationships with friends and family.

“Banning them could hinder social interactions and leisure time pursuits, which would be detrimental to mental health and community cohesion,” the speaker stated.

He went on to say that Malaysia is renowned for its varied culinary traditions, and the nation’s rich culinary legacy is enhanced by its 24-hour dining establishments.

He claimed that outlawing these 24-hour restaurants would limit the selection of food available and damage Malaysia’s reputation as a food haven.
