VIENTIANE, Jan – Laos is continuing to prioritise tourism as a key driver of sustainable economic and social growth, as it prepares to welcome more visitors by leveraging its rich cultural heritage and natural attractions.
Speaking at a government meeting in mid-January, Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Suansavanh Viyaket said the country is pursuing sustainable tourism development under a green industry approach, integrating natural attractions with cultural heritage and historical assets.
She said the strategy focuses on balancing effective state management with market demand, strengthening domestic and regional tourism linkages, upgrading infrastructure and services, diversifying destination promotion through various media platforms, and encouraging community participation to ensure tourism growth remains safe and sustainable.
A Vientiane resident, Tanu, voiced support for efforts to promote tourism while safeguarding the environment, describing sustainable tourism as the most suitable path for Laos, which is endowed with distinctive natural landscapes.
“Our waterfalls, forests, rivers and mountains are unique and a source of national pride that must be protected by all sectors and communities,” he said, adding that digital platforms play an important role in attracting visitors by showcasing the country’s attractions to a global audience.
Meanwhile, Noy, a resident of Khammuan province, said environmental conservation and biodiversity protection are crucial to preserving Laos’ natural assets for future generations, noting that international visitors are often impressed by the country’s scenery.
As Laos develops its tourism sector, which combines nature, historical sites, and ethnic traditions, Anny, a local tour guide, said the industry provides an opportunity to highlight the nation’s unique culture and way of life. She expressed hope that more international tourists would discover Laos’ natural and cultural richness as the government works to unlock its full tourism potential.
Balamy, a driver in Vientiane, said he is ready to welcome more domestic and international visitors, many of whom are drawn to landmarks such as Patuxay, That Luang and the city’s historic temples, as well as its calm and peaceful atmosphere.
“I am prepared to show visitors the beauty and charm of Laos along every road,” he said.
Laos aims to attract more than 43 million visitors between 2026 and 2030, comprising 21 million domestic and 22 million international tourists. To achieve this target, the government plans to upgrade infrastructure at major tourist destinations, improve service quality and enhance workforce skills within the tourism sector.
In 2025, Laos recorded over 4.5 million international tourist arrivals, a 11 per cent increase year-over-year and exceeding the government’s target. Thailand, China and Vietnam were the leading source markets, reflecting the country’s growing appeal as a sustainable and culturally rich destination – Xinhua
