Local artists were awarded RM60,000 in grants by Tourism Selangor for works

MALAYSIA- Six art enthusiasts will receive awards totalling RM60,000 from Tourism Selangor to support the state’s creative sector.

The projects of the recipients were on display from Friday, June 7 to yesterday at the 2024 Design and Craft Festival (Tukang) at The Spine @ PJKita in Petaling Jaya, according to the state executive councillor for tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim.

The festival was planned to showcase regional artistic talent and boost Selangor’s tourist and creative sectors.

Six of the thirty proposals that were made in December of last year were chosen and received RM60,000 apiece.

At Tukang’s closing ceremony yesterday, he stated, “Each winner produced a piece of art and craft that aligned with the given theme, ‘Circular Economy,’ through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) concept.”

Ng went on to say that in addition to boosting the local economy, the distinctiveness of the on-display artwork might draw tourists interested in seeing Selangor’s handicrafts.

“I am happy to see so many young people taking part in the Tukang Festival this year, which is in its second iteration.

He remarked, “A wide range of artwork and handicrafts created by gifted artists were on show, including Wayang Robot by Ahnaf Hakimi and Scaling Up Scraps by Syiborisyd and Aruznadi.”

This year, funding was also awarded to the following projects: Deru Arus (Jamil Zakaria), Pagar 2tt by Parti Design Awangan, Dung Beetle-A Participatory “Dirt” Exploration (Cheng Yen Peng), and The Light of All Things (Khabir Roslan).

The festival, which was coordinated by Rantai Art and Tourism Selangor, included performances by regional “indie” bands such as Kingsley Chen, Lorita Nyepit, and Daliliyana.

More than two thousand people from Malaysia and outside attended the event, which featured food and drink vendors along with art and craft sales.
