GEORGE TOWN, July 11 – The International Congress of the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Malaysia (OGSM) was today opened in Penang with a strong call on women’s health and cooperative innovation, opened by Penang State Executive Councillor YB Daniel Gooi Zi Sen.
Organized in the city centre of George Town, the congress drew the world’s leading medical professionals, researchers, and policymakers to exchange ideas on innovation in obstetrics and gynaecology. The congress reaffirmed Penang’s enhanced positioning as a centre for medical excellence and scientific exchange.
In his welcome speech, Gooi provided a warm welcome to foreign guests and reiterated Penang’s commitment towards improving maternal and reproductive health care. He also indicated a large federal allocation into Penang’s health centres — amounting to RM758 million — including a single Women and Children’s Block, a Stem Cell Services Block, and Specialist Clinic and Ward Block at Penang Hospital.
“These efforts are a reflection of the federal-state commitment to delivering quality, inclusive care for women, children, and families,” he continued.
The congress, hosted by OGSM in association with the Ministry of Health Malaysia, offered a platform to address issues in women’s health from fertility and maternal outcomes to equitable access and new technologies.
Bridging tradition and modern science, Gooi cited the relevance of Traditional Chinese Medicine’s Five Elements to women’s health — a nod to a holistic treatment that is also cosmopolitan in appeal. He emphasized the importance of balance, saying: “A balanced life is a healthy life.”
Gooi also commended OGSM’s ongoing endeavours in advocacy, education, and research, as well as its key role in crafting national and regional women’s healthcare policies.
With united might and hearts, metal can even be broken,” he continued to quote the ancient Chinese book I Ching, as he spoke of greater coordination between medical experts and policymakers to achieve lasting change.
The Penang State Government itself, he continued, was honoured to be hosting an event of such a character and was pleased to welcome the sustainable effect it would have on the state and global communities.
The OGSM Congress runs over a number of days, with plenary sessions, panel presentations by experts, and workshops on women’s health in the future.
