JOHOR BARU, July 15 — Johor’s public healthcare system is reaching a critical point as a worsening manpower shortage continues to stretch frontline workers beyond safe limits, The Star reported.

During a visit to Hospital Sultan Ismail (HSI), Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi expressed grave concern over the situation, revealing that some nurses have been tasked with caring for up to 14 patients per shift — more than double the recommended nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6.

“This situation is not only unfair to our medical staff but also poses a serious risk to patient safety if left unresolved,” he was quoted as saying. The Star also reported that the issue extends beyond nurses, with serious shortages of specialist doctors, medical officers, assistant medical officers, and support staff plaguing major hospitals in the state.

Onn Hafiz stressed that the state government is treating the matter with urgency and will continue pushing for improved facilities and immediate staffing support. He said the issue would be brought directly to the attention of the Health Ministry and other relevant agencies.

The Star further reported that Onn Hafiz intends to personally appeal for federal intervention to expedite the filling of vacancies across Johor’s public hospitals. He also conveyed appreciation for the dedication of all healthcare workers and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to building a more sustainable and efficient health system.

The Mentri Besar’s remarks come shortly after Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail also called on Putrajaya to urgently address the overcrowding and staff shortages affecting key hospitals, including Hospital Sultanah Aminah, HSI, and Hospital Temenggong Seri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim in Kulai.
