Penang jewelers contribute 80% to Malaysia’s gold, and jewelry exports, says Penang Exco

GEORGE TOWN, May 31 (InfoTourism)-Penang’s jewellers form the backbone of Malaysia’s gold and jewellery exports, contributing 80% to the industry, says Penang exco.

The exco for Tourism and Creative Economy (PETACE), Wong Hon Wai said Malaysia exported RM7.7 billion worth of gold and jewellery in 2023, up from RM7.39 billion in 2022.

He said the upward trend continued this year, with RM1.29 billion worth of exports recorded from January to February, compared to RM1.09 billion during the same period last year.

“The gold and jewellery industry has long been a cornerstone of Malaysia’s economy, employing over 30,000 skilled craftsmen, designers, and professionals.

“In addition, Seberang Perai (mainland) is the hub of Malaysia’s goldsmithing industry, which has long enjoyed a global reputation,” he said in his speech at the Province Wellesley Gold & Silver Ornament Merchants Association (PWGS)Trade Fair 2024 opening ceremony here, today.

Yearly organised by PWGS and supported by the Federation of Goldsmiths and Jewellers Associations of Malaysia (FGJAM), the event showcases an array of gold and jewellery from around the world.

This year, it has brought approximately 47 companies from Malaysia, Singapore, and China, occupying approximately 93 booths with aims to attract buyers from China, India, Singapore, Dubai Yemen and Hong Kong.

The event is scheduled to be held from May 31 to June 2 at the Setia SPICE Convention Centre.
