GEORGE TOWN: Penang’s cruise sector received a major boost as the Penang Port Commission (PPC) confirmed that the MV Piano Land, operated by Astro Ocean, will begin home-porting in the state, a move expected to generate fresh economic spillover for tourism players and local businesses.
The vessel will operate eight home-port departures from Penang, signalling renewed confidence in the state’s capacity to anchor itself as a regional cruise hub.
PPC chairman Dato’ Yeoh Soon Hin said the development reflects the strong collaboration between the port, industry partners and the Transport Ministry.
“Having MV Piano Land choose Penang as its home port is a clear vote of confidence in our facilities, our people and our long-term vision for sustainable cruise growth,” he said. “These eight departures will translate into direct and indirect benefits for tourism operators, small businesses and the wider supply chain across Penang.”

Penang’s cruise prospects continue on an upward trajectory, with Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal projected to welcome 679,809 passengers in 2025. Passenger volume is expected to surge by a further 47% in 2026, underscoring the state’s readiness to scale up home-porting operations and deliver tangible impact to local communities.
PPC also extended its appreciation to the Transport Ministry, particularly Minister Anthony Loke, for his leadership in advancing Malaysia’s cruise agenda and positioning the sector as a driver of economic growth.
The commission said it remains committed to working closely with the ministry, industry stakeholders and government agencies to ensure smooth operations as Penang gears up for its expanded home-porting programme.
