Wong Hon Wai: Welcome ‘Mr. Player’ to Penang for Filming, Boosting Penang’s International Visibility

Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy – YB Wong Hon Wai, warmly welcomes the renowned variety show “Mr. Player,” as it embarks on a 4 days filming expedition in Penang. Known for embracing the real and true spirit of adventure through exciting challenges and fun punishments, filled with fun and surprises that leave the audience in stitches. The esteemed cast, including hosts Jacky Wu, Kid Lin, Kunda Hsieh, and esteemed celebrities like Kuo Hsien Ma and Tsai Wei Lin, will grace Penang’s shores, further solidifying its status as a premier destination for global film and television productions.

Penang has experienced a surge in prominence, particularly within the creative economy domain, since the onset of the year. Earlier, actors Ron Ng from the movie “Deliverance” visited Penang to promote their films. Later, Joey Yung, Charlene Choi, Gillian Chung, and Samantha Ko Hoi-ling arrived by cruise ship to film variety show in Penang. Moreover, Hugo Man-To Leung also visited Restaurant Hao Xian Wei in Karpal Singh Drive for a TikTok program. Additionally, Penang-born directors Sam Quah and his filming team are also shooting the movie “A Place Called Silence” on the streets and alleys of Penang. Now, the city welcomes the filming of the variety show ” Mr. Player” adding another highlight to its vibrant atmosphere.

Known for its diverse array of game challenges and well known celebrity guests, the variety show ‘Mr. Player’ will bring its distinctive brand of entertainment to Penang’s vibrant streets and breathtaking vistas. With its rich cultural heritage, diverse culinary scene, and breathtaking scenery, Penang sets the perfect backdrop for the show’s dynamic content. During the filming period, the production team will visit some of Penang’s iconic landmarks, such as the streets of harmony and Padang Kota Lama, to capture more of the iconic scenes that Penang has to offer, not only make the show’s content even more vibrant and colorful, but also showcase the unique charm and beauty of Penang.

Watching the show has sparked interest among tourists from around the world to visit Penang, and with the increasing number of direct flights available, they can easily reach Penang to enjoy its scenic beauty, culinary delights, and unforgettable experiences. The growing number of film and television programs filming in Penang not only showcases the city’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage to global audiences but also highlights the vibrant development of Penang’s creative economy sector and the state’s commitment to supporting the arts and entertainment industry.”

Since its premiere in July 2014, the variety show “Mr. Player” has been broadcasted in multiple countries. Additionally, on its YouTube channel, “Mr. Player” has garnered over 1 billion views and has become the television program’s YouTube channel with over 15.5 million subscribers. Besides, the show was also nominated for the 52nd (2017), 53rd (2018) and 54th (2019) Golden Bell Awards, and host won for two sessions consecutively.

The filming of ‘Mr. Player’ in Penang is expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy, with increased tourism and opportunities for local businesses to collaborate with and learn from the production team. Additionally, the exposure gained from being featured in a popular variety show will further elevate Penang’s profile as a must-visit destination in Southeast Asia.
