Penang, Malaysia — Excitement is building in Penang as the annual International Dragon Boat Regatta approaches, set for November 23-24 at Straits Quay Retail Marina. This year’s regatta marks a special milestone: the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations.
Organizing Chairman YB Wong Hon Wai shared that the 2024 regatta holds added significance with support from the Consulate General of China in Penang and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO). This partnership is emblematic of the close ties between Malaysia and China and elevates the regatta as a symbol of international friendship.
In a major highlight, an inaugural HK Express flight will arrive from Hong Kong to Penang on November 22, with over 100 paddlers on board for the regatta. This initiative, Wong explained, represents a fresh chapter for travel and cultural exchange between Hong Kong and Penang.
This year’s event promises intense competition, with over 1,600 participants from 61 teams across 12 countries, including China, Hong Kong, the UK, Netherlands, Japan, Singapore, the UAE, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, Chinese Taipei, and Malaysia.
Held for the first time at the scenic Straits Quay Retail Marina, the regatta has moved from its previous venue at Teluk Bahang Dam to provide better accessibility and viewing for spectators. Eastern & Oriental Berhad (E&O), the venue sponsor, has made it possible to host the regatta at Straits Quay, enhancing the experience for both locals and visitors alike.
“The new venue allows us to bring the event closer to the public,” said Wong. “With vibrant viewing spots and a lively atmosphere, it’s an ideal setting for dragon boat enthusiasts and those looking for a fun weekend.”
The Penang Dragon Boat race dates back to the 1950s, originally established to celebrate the traditional Chinese Dragon Boat Festival. It has since evolved into a world-renowned sporting and cultural event. This year also commemorates the 45th anniversary of the Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta, which has grown to embody Penang’s spirit of cultural heritage and unity.
Several key sponsors support this year’s regatta: Seiko, the official timing sponsor, Angsana, the official hotel sponsor, and Spin, the official apparel sponsor. Their contributions have been instrumental in ensuring the event’s success.
The Penang Dragon Boat Regatta 2024 invites the community, tourists, and families to come and join the festivities on November 23-24 from morning to evening. “Whether cheering for teams or simply soaking in the lively atmosphere, this promises to be a memorable weekend,” said Wong.
Mark your calendars and join the celebration of sportsmanship, culture, and unity at Straits Quay Marina in Penang.
